Mangaldeep Ashram
Fr. Mangal Das, SJ, was appointed to explore the possibilities of starting a centre in Bankura district in February 1980. He started the evangelization work through non-formal education known as STAG Method. In June 17, 1980 Fr. A. Carvalho, SJ, joined him and both stayed in Mirga village in a hut rented to them by a Santal. In February 1985, Fr. Carvalho, SJ, bought eleven bighas of land at Mirga for the non-formal school and Mass centre. In September 1985, a hostel was started in a newly built house by Fr. Mangal Das, SJ. A plot of land was purchased at Jhantipahari in 2001 where in 2004, he constructed a tribal hostel. Subsequently, the priests have stayed in Jhantipahari and looked after the mass centre at Mirga and the Hostel. The school was built in 2013 with the help and support of St. Xavier’s School, Durgapur. In 2023 a hostel for girls was built to accommodate the girl children with all the basic facilities.
In January 2026, we have in English Medium (Nursery to class V) approximately 100 children and in Bengali medium (KG to class V) approximately 320 children respectively.
