Loyola Jayanti Vidyapith

The Archbishop of Calcutta assigned Bankura district to the Jesuits of Kolkata Province in the early eighties for evangelization. Consequently Fr. Aloysius Carvalho and Fr. Mangal Das entered Chatna block of Bankura district looking for a suitable location to settle down. Fr. A. Carvalho chose Mirga as the center of his activities. In the late eighties Fr. P. C Mathew, the then Provincial, searched for a location near Bankura town and bought the present Bankura property. In 1990 Fr. Aelred Gomes, the then Provincial assigned Fr P. C. Mathew to develop the Bankura center in 1990. He came and settled in a make shift shed and started work. He prepared a plan for a school building and began the work. The present structure is one fourth of that rectangular building plan. In 1992 he was called back to Calcutta to become the Principal of St. Xavier’s College. Fr. A Carvalho succeeded him. Eventually a portion of the building was ready and the Pre-Noviciate was shifted from Prabhu Jisur Girja to this building in Bankura for a while. After three years, the Pre-Noviciate went back to Kolkata and the building was free to accommodate hostel boys. Fr. Carvalho remained as the director of the hostel assisted by a regent until he met with an accident and taken back to Kolkata for treatment. Fr. Carvalho was succeeded by Fr. Arul Joseph, Fr. Joseph Pulickal, Fr. Probal Gomes and again by Fr. Pulickal who was replaced by Fr. Sebastian Nallail, the present incumbent.

Loyola Jayanti Vidyapith has accommodation for fifty students, ten students each from classes six to ten. They attend the neighbouring government schools. A plan is in the making to start an English medium school in the existing property.
